Dangerous contamination was caused by the activity of the former Wood Chemical Company (WCC), at Velikiy Bychkiv, Zakarpattya Ukraine, threatening the living areas by contaminated groundwater and drinking water supply. Pollutants (phenol, BTEX & PAH compounds, TPH) may effect the water quality of river Shopurka and the international River Tisa, through infiltration of groundwater. The spread of various pollutants in rivers endanger biota, valuable ecosystems of the Upper-Tisa region.
The long-term impact of the project will be the saved water quality and ecosystems of rivers secured by removing contaminants from the groundwater at V. Bychkiv. In other hand the water cleaned by the methods used (pump and treat technology), will be reusable for various purposes. The threat to the municipal drinking water supply is also eliminated.
Expected achievements:
1.Liquidated contamination in the area of the former WCC;
2.Improved life quality and health of local people in the area (people will be able to use water from shallow wells or surface waters in the area for household needs and will have drinking water);
3.Investment potential will be improved on the cleaned-up territory, which will be suitable for further usage.
Expected results:
Environmental impact assessment of the contaminated areas will be done & a specific remediation plan will be developed based on its results. The existing remediation system will be expanded & properly operated. The actions for hazardous waste management arranged on the site. All activities will be permanently monitored & controlled.
The best practices of remediation disseminated among environmental experts.
Release of contaminants must be stopped with continuation of the efficient & innovative on-site remediation procedure
The purification technology used is based on a custom-designed system (pump & treat technology) adapted and designed specially to the needs of the area. The polluted soil is cleaned using a patent procedure in Hungary.
