The project intends to face the dual challenge of cultural heritage preservation and the improvement of touristic activities in the cross-border area. The project involves Ukraine and Hungary through two local landmark churches (In Nyíregyháza and Berehovo) which are of major touristic significance for people visiting the area. The planned activities include infrastructural development and soft (tourism-related activities) as well as professional project management and the dissemination of the project results. As a result of the project the churches involved in the project will gain new functions which are the following:
- Both in Nyíregyháza and Berehovo belltowers will be used as lookout points. For this, the stairwell and the related indoor areas need to be renewed and restructured in both cases, with a complete stair reconstruction in Beherovo and the replacement of the bell control unit in Nyíregyháza
- In Berehovo the roof and gutter system repair and reconstruction of the drainage system around the building are the first to do to prevent the deterioration of the building
- In Nyíregyháza new areas are to be developed (male and female lavatories/toilets) playroom, common room for project events, etc.
At the same time, the new functions together with the accompanying soft components of the project are intended to improve the visibility of the locations thus contributing to the overall indicators of the cross-border area specified in the call of proposal.
The target groups to be reached by the innovative set of proposed activities consists of directly reached target groups like local religious communities living in the cross- border area and tourists visiting the area as the developments resulting from the project will strengthen the touristic offer of the region and the involved cities. The indirect target group of the project is the inhabitants of the cross-border area and the involved cities, local communities, church organizations and local businesses.
