The need to increase the interest of the younger generation in the state of the environment requires a comprehensive approach to the development of environmental skills. In the framework of the EFFUSE project funded through the Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2014-2020, a field trip with pupils and teachers in the Laborec river basin was carried out on 12 April 2022 in order to raise the level of environmental literacy.
During the field day, pupils had the opportunity to visit two sites. The first site was the Laborec River near the bridge towards Krivošt'any. Then, under the supervision of experts, the pupils investigated the environmental condition of the Duša stream. In addition to educational activities, waste collection was also carried out at this site with the participation of the Atéma Civic Association and the company Syráreň Bel Slovensko a.s. Michalovce.
During the educational environmental activities, pupils tried working with measuring instruments to measure the basic characteristics of water at the visited sites. Pupils acquainted with the ways of observing aquatic fauna and flora and had the opportunity to manipulate the tools for trapping animals. They also explored the habitat around the watercourse. The investigation of the state of the environment continued in the improvised laboratory, where, in addition to working with measuring instruments, the pupils had the opportunity to observe the captured organisms by microscope and to evaluate their findings. All activities were carried out under the guidance of experts from Department of biology and ecology UPJŠ in Košice.
